Voltage — Low Voltage vs Line Voltage
Low voltage (12VDC / 24VDC) is preferred for landscape and hospitality zones — no electrocution risk if cable insulation is compromised, simpler zone control with DALI or DMX drivers. Line voltage (220–240VAC) suits large commercial plaza installations with long cable runs where voltage drop makes low-voltage systems impractical.

Important: IP ratings are not cumulative. An IP68 fixture has not necessarily passed IP67 testing — the two tests use different protocols. Always request third-party test certificates specifying the declared depth and duration.
IK Rating — Impact Resistance
IP rating says nothing about mechanical survival. For ground-level fixtures, IK10 (20-joule impact resistance per IEC 62262) should be the default for any commercial installation. IK10 fixtures survive a vehicle tyre rolling across them at low speed without the lens cracking or the housing deforming in a way that breaks the IP seal. Specify IK08 only for residential gardens with no vehicle access and controlled pedestrian traffic.

The most common causes of early field failure are not product defects — they are installation errors that compromise waterproof integrity of a fixture that left the factory fully sealed.
Excavation & Sleeve Preparation
Total excavation depth = sleeve depth + 100mm concrete base (150mm minimum in vehicle-access zones). Set the sleeve top face flush with finished paving level — not proud, not recessed. Pack non-shrink grout around the full sleeve perimeter before surrounding concrete is poured. Allow full cure (min 48 hours) before fixture installation.
Waterproof Junction Box & Cable Connection
Junction box IP rating must match or exceed fixture IP rating. Use VDE-certified cable throughout — non-certified cable uses PVC compounds that crack under freeze-thaw cycling, admitting moisture over time. Apply PTFE thread tape to all threaded cable glands. Tug-test each entry to confirm the gland grips the cable jacket.
Fixture Placement & Beam Alignment
For adjustable inground lights, connect temporary power and illuminate before fastening. Rotate the head to the target direction while observing the effect on the lit surface. Mark the correct orientation before disconnecting power. Use a torque screwdriver at the manufacturer's specified value — overtightening tempered glass lids causes stress fractures.
Test Before Final Backfilling
Run an insulation resistance test (500V DC, minimum 1MΩ) to confirm no cable damage occurred during installation. Illuminate for 10 minutes minimum — check for flicker, beam direction, condensation on inner lens face, and correct DALI/DMX address response.
